Oregon is a state of extremes. You can start your day in a misty forest and end it in a sunny desert. Unlike the sandy beaches of Hawaii, Oregon's coast is raw and powerful.

A few summers ago, Antriksh and I decided to explore the state of Oregon. From Portland to the rugged Pacific coastline, inland to the crown jewel of the state at Crater Lake, through the volcanic landscapes, and back via the waterfall-filled Columbia River Gorge — every turn revealed something unexpected and breathtaking

Whether you're a hiker, a photographer, or just an animal lover (alpacas, anyone?), Oregon has a spot for you. Here's our complete itinerary.

The Journey

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Follow our carefully planned route through Oregon's most breathtaking landscapes

Day 1

Portland Arrival & Yaquina Head Lighthouse

Yaquina Head Lighthouse at sunset on the Oregon coast

We landed early morning, picked up the rental car, and immediately headed to the Portland Japanese Garden. After hours on a plane, the garden offered an immediate sense of calm - the kind of peaceful reset you need before a week of adventure.

Lunch was at Bollywood Theater, a spot bursting with vibrant energy that reminded me of the streets of Mumbai. Fully fueled, we drove west toward the Pacific Highway. The landscape began to shift - the air grew cooler, mistier, and we could feel the ocean before we could see it.

Our first major stop: Yaquina Head Lighthouse. Standing 93 feet tall, this beacon has guided ships since 1873. We timed our arrival perfectly for sunset, watching the warm light hit the white tower as the sun dipped toward the horizon. The easy 0.8-mile Cobble Beach Loop trail was the perfect way to stretch our legs and take in the rugged coastline.

Pro Tip

Time your arrival at Yaquina Head Lighthouse perfectly for sunset - watching the light hit the tower as the sun dips toward the horizon is magical.

Day 2

The Pacific Coast & Cape Perpetua

Thor's Well at Cape Perpetua with waves crashing into the natural sinkhole

Today was all about the raw power of the Oregon coast. We started at Cape Perpetua - the highest point on the Oregon Coast you can reach by car. The views alone were worth the drive, but the real show was just getting started.

Thor's Well looks like a literal sinkhole swallowing the ocean whole. We'd read how the waves crash in and the water swirls, making you wonder if the sea is draining into the center of the earth. However, when we arrived, our timing wasn't quite right; we were a bit too far from high tide, so the 'drainpipe' effect wasn't as dramatic as we'd hoped. We also explored Cook's Chasm, with its beautiful natural stone bridge spanning the churning waters below, and the Devil's Churn Viewpoint.

Heceta Head Lighthouse

Later, we visited Heceta Head Lighthouse and ended the day at the Oregon Sand Dunes. The dunes felt like we'd been transported to another planet entirely - a surreal contrast to the forested coastline. To truly experience the scale of the landscape, we took a giant buggy ride with Sandland Adventures. Flying over the peaks and dips of the sand was easily one of the biggest adrenaline rushes of the entire trip!

Pro Tip

Timing is everything at Cape Perpetua! To see Thor's Well in its full glory, visit an hour before or after high tide. The waves are unpredictable and powerful - be careful!

Day 3

Crater Lake National Park & Rim Drive

The impossibly blue waters of Crater Lake with Wizard Island visible

We drove inland toward the crown jewel of Oregon: Crater Lake National Park. The anticipation built with every mile, but nothing could have prepared us for that first glimpse.

The lake is indescribable. It's the deepest in the country and arguably the bluest thing on Earth. The color isn't just blue - it's a shade of blue that seems impossible, almost digital. It's the kind of blue you'd think only exists in heavily edited photos. But there it was, real and overwhelming.

We drove the scenic Rim Drive, stopping at every overlook because we simply couldn't help ourselves. Each viewpoint offered a slightly different angle, a new way to try (and fail) to comprehend the scale and beauty. We hiked to Plaikni Falls for a change of scenery, then watched the sunset turn the Willamette National Forest into a silhouette of evergreens against a pink and orange sky.

Day 4

Volcanic Landscape & Proxy Falls

Proxy Falls cascading down moss-covered volcanic rock in the Oregon wilderness

Yesterday we were staring at the deepest lake in America; today we found ourselves in a completely different world.

We started at the Belknap Lava Field Viewing Point, where ancient volcanic flows have left behind an otherworldly landscape of black rock stretching toward the horizon. It's stark, alien, and strangely beautiful.

The Proxy Falls hike was the highlight of the day. The trail leads through lush forest to a stunning two-tiered waterfall that seems to appear out of nowhere. The moss-covered volcanic rock glistens with spray, and the sound of rushing water fills the air. We also visited Sahalie Falls and caught distant views of Mount Jefferson - its snow-capped peak rising above the tree line like a painting.

Day 5

Bend, Smith Rock & Mount Hood Views

Smith Rock State Park with dramatic rock formations rising above the Crooked River

We kicked off the day with a hike at Tumalo Falls Trailhead - a perfect morning workout with the reward of a stunning 97-foot waterfall. The mist felt refreshing in the early summer heat.

We were super excited to check out Crescent Moon Ranch in Terrebonne to meet the furry friends! What's a road trip without some unexpected whimsy? We spent time interacting with alpacas against a backdrop of mountains, it was absolutely memorable.

The afternoon took us to Smith Rock State Park. The red and orange volcanic rock formations rise dramatically above the Crooked River, and we could see rock climbers dotting the cliff faces. We ended the day at Trillium Lake, walking the shoreline loop as Mount Hood reflected perfectly in the still water.

Trillium Lake

Day 6

The Waterfall Corridor & Multnomah Falls

Columbia River Gorge with waterfalls cascading down lush green cliffs

We looped back toward Portland through the Columbia River Gorge, home to over 90 waterfalls. Our first stop was the historic Vista House, where panoramic cliffside views stretch for miles across the river and mountains.

Then began the waterfall hopping. We visited Bridal Veil Falls before heading to the iconic Multnomah Falls. Standing on Benson Bridge between its two massive drops was incredible—you can truly feel the power of the 620-foot cascade. We finished the day discovering more hidden gems around every bend, surrounded by a constant symphony of mist and rushing water.

Day 7

Reflections & Heading Home

Our final hours in Oregon were spent soaking in Portland's quirky charm. We explored the local food scene one last time. Portland has a way of making every meal feel like a discovery, whether it's a hole-in-the-wall food cart or a trendy brunch spot

Seven days wasn't enough for exploring the whole state but it was enough to fall completely in love. I am already planning a return trip.
